eFront Insight

eFront Insight is a private asset management platform from BlackRock that brings fund research, manager due diligence and portfolio monitoring into a single tool for institutional investors in private markets.

Background

eFront is a French software company focused on alternative investments. BlackRock acquired it in 2019. In February 2026 BlackRock announced that Preqin’s private markets data had been integrated into eFront, giving clients one place to manage the full investment lifecycle. I had the privilege of working on this integration.

Who uses it

eFront Insight is built for Limited Partners (LPs), the investors who commit capital to private equity, private credit, real estate or infrastructure funds. A typical LP holds dozens or hundreds of fund commitments across many General Partners (GPs), and each GP reports in its own format and on its own schedule. Keeping that data consistent is a large part of the job, which is why a dedicated platform makes sense.

Pre-investment

Pre-investment covers everything before capital is committed to a fund. eFront Insight supports:

  • Market mapping - finding investment opportunities and fund managers that fit the portfolio’s objectives
  • Manager due diligence - assessing a GP on strategy, track record and operations
  • Benchmarking - automated visual analytics on fund performance data
  • Custom indices - building benchmarks by asset class, strategy, geography and industry
  • Allocation planning - using fund performance, manager track records and public market comparisons
  • AI-assisted workflows - manager shortlisting, fund profiling, and automated cash flow modelling for liquidity planning

Post-investment

After the commitment, the focus moves to monitoring:

  • Capital calls and distributions from GPs flow into eFront, which improves portfolio oversight and speeds up reporting
  • Ongoing tracking of performance, cash flows and liquidity against portfolio targets
  • Risk and performance drivers can be analysed on one platform

Cash flow forecasting matters a lot here. LPs have to fund capital calls they cannot fully predict, so they need a view of uncalled commitments. If you want to read more about that, see Dry Powder.

Why it matters

Private markets have historically been opaque: data is private, reporting is slow, and benchmarks are hard to build. eFront Insight addresses this by putting pre-investment research and post-investment monitoring on the same data foundation. When the same fund appears in both the due diligence screen and the portfolio dashboard, the investment team can compare what was expected with what actually happened.
